“God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.” Psalm 46:5 KJV. The psalmist is writing here about the security of the people of God. He describes great troubles around them, “Though the earth be removed…, though the waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake…” But then we find the reason that they are secure, because God Himself is with them! He is their Refuge and Strength, a very present Help in time of trouble. For over 2000 years this has been the security of God’s church. And for God’s children today, this is still what keeps us secure in the midst of this troubled and sinful world that is shaking on so many levels. The societies of men are shaking. There is great instability in many governments. There are wars and rumors of wars. Many of the things people have depended on are changing and slipping away. But how blessed we are to know that Christ, Who lives in us, is far greater than all of these things around us! Let us be strong in faith and confident, as the songwriter proclaimed, ‘I shall not be, I shall not be moved. Just like a tree planted by the water, I shall not be moved’. As long as our God is with us, we can make it.
