“And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.” John 12:23 KJV. As Jesus spoke these words we should be aware of the setting they were in. He has just come from His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, where the crowds sang His praises. Word of Lazarus rising from the dead had spread and many were interested in Jesus. And even the Greeks, who were the intellectual elite of their day, had come seeking Jesus. So when He says these words, His followers are thinking entirely of earthly glory. They are thinking that the time has come for His earthly kingdom to be established. All their dreams of prominence were finally going to be fulfilled. All they could see at this point was the great opportunity and potential that was before Jesus on a human level. But we know, the glory He spoke of had nothing to do with earthly or material things. It was not the fleeting glory that came from men which Jesus sought. Rather, He was speaking of the exceeding glory of accomplishing His Father’s will and purpose in His atoning death on the cross. He was thinking of the glory of seeing many sons brought to the Father. But what glory are we thinking of today? Are we thinking of things on a human level? By God’s grace, let us seek the glory of pleasing our Heavenly Father and doing His will.
