“He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich He hath sent empty away.” Luke‬ ‭1:53‬ ‭KJV‬‬. The ones Mary is speaking of here are those who hunger for God. Those who long for the righteousness that only comes from God. Jesus said in Matt. 5:6 “Blessed at are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled”. These are not like the ‘rich of this world’ who believe their worldly wealth and material possessions are all they need. Rather, these hungering souls will be filled with the good things provided only by God’s grace. They will be filled with God’s love and mercy. They will be satisfied with the goodness of God. They will be enriched with the spiritual blessings that are eternal and worth far more than all of this perishing world. Today we have a false religious world that is trying in vain to get ‘filled up’ with the things of this world. They run after fleshly pleasures and worldly things day after day. And yet, always they go away empty. They gather in their places of worship where they have their ears tickled and feel good about themselves, and yet they go away empty in their soul. May God help us to always have a heart that hungers for Him above all else. Let us open our hearts to Him, and be filled with His own life and love, and we will be rich beyond measure.
